  • Mario Beffa, Zim HB : Q&A Horn Indigenous goats are small because they are adapted to the environment. What are the implications in terms of additional costs (food, health etc) of genetic empowerment and would farmers be willing to change their mindsets. At the moment goats are left to themselves, they are not farmed. Has there been any success to date?
  • Dr Michael Bradfield : They are Dr Fanie Steyn, Prof Norman Maiwashe, Mr Jaco Maas and Albie Horn
  • Dr Michael Bradfield : Any questions for the panellists in an hours time.
  • Adolf Mokobane: gues : good morning

  • Dr Michael Bradfield : Morning Mandla, we will be making some announcements in the next few months re your observation ona Team Southern African Approach. Watch this space!
  • Mario Beffa, Zimbabw : For Dr Dong Wang How important is meat quality/traceability i.e no use of growth hormone, animal welfare to the current Chinese market. Secondly are the expensive cuts the same for both markets or does the Chinese market value other cuts
  • T. Sebonego : Question to Vytelle: Is there correlation between Feed efficiency and other Profit drivers - specifically Reproductive performance etc.. Do you have plan(s) to add other Profit drivers to your Data platforms or integrate with existing Platforms eg Breedplan, or you are only focused on Precision Feed efficiency. I guess a seamless system pulling data (on all available Profit markers) will make life easier for farmers:- Just a thought

  • guest_8218 : Is beefschool over for the day
  • Mandla Nkomo : The answer is we need to build a Team Beef Southern Africa approach and build an integrated beef system that gives us a competetive edge. One of the things is we need to start participating in the GRSB, through SARRSB and also lead the conversation in sustainable beef production. If we continue fragmented, or relying on magic from governments we will fail.
  • Dr Michael Bradfield : The presentations will be made available to all those that have subscribed

  • Mario Beffa : Q&A von Bach is the idea to switch supply to countries on the basis of unfavourable exchange rate? If so then there would seem to be a risk of being unconsistent and losing a market that could be profitable in the future?
  • Mario Beffa : For Dr Froneman Does blocking a herd affect its natural immunity. He also gave us 5 areas to focus on to improve herd health 1. BIO SECURITY 2. GENETICS 3. NUTRITION etc would he rate those topics as the order of importance to address on farm as well
  • Mario Beffa : For Prof Von Bach. Is it not that cow numbers have dropped but calving percentages are much better so productivity is much the same and is that not a good thing.
  • Mario Beffa : Q&A von Bach Will the movement to green economies and carbon emissions reduction not affect global demand cf. Predictions of global demand increasing to 105 million tons in 2050

  • Mabaeti Molelekoa : At what stage do we envisage the levy? At slaughter or throughout the value chain?
  • Mario Beffa : *Q&A Paul Strydom* in Zimbabwe movement of cattle involves Vet Dept and Police. Authorisation is a barrier to marketing as it is slow and there is sometimes rent seeking by officials. Smallholder Farmers often prefer to sell to middlemen at farm gate who organise authorisation. But this comes at a cost as price is discounted sometimes heavily. Has the FANFARM had any similar unintended consequences for smallholders?
  • Yolanda Kavetuna : I am wondering how movement happens north of the cordon fence in the high risk areas.
  • Yolanda Kavetuna : Mario Beffa they are very strict in terms of the declarations. You can't get movement permits if you dont comlete declarations. All farmers below the cordon fence are part of the scheme.
  • Mario Beffa : *Q&A Paul Strydom* Assuming the FANMEAT scheme includes smallholders. This must be an enormous effort and cost. How many communal livestock owners are in Namibia? What costs are involved for them? What are the lessons learned in rolling out the scheme with smallholders? So they all submit declarations twice a year?
  • Onke Landingwe : Thanks for the info

  • Mario Beffa : What has the SA Livestock Sector done toward an inclusive Livestock Sector? Mr Ramasodi, early in his presentation, said the livestock sector is doing well. By this does he meant that there are about 600,000 smallholder producers? Or are there models of inclusive best practice between the private sector and the 600,000?
